In psychology, it differs from project to project. Sometimes I am doing every part of the research involved in a project on my own: I come up with how to set up an experiment, collect the data, analyse it and then try to make sense of it for publication. In those cases, my boss might sometimes pop up with suggestions and help when I get stuck but that’s it. In other projects, you might end up working in a team with students, research assistants and other researchers: that might be because the project is too big to pull it off on your own or you might need the help from other people who have skills you don’t have. I think, personally, I like working in (smallish) teams better than working all on my own!
