Doing the stand up comedy training, and getting experience in doing comedy, had definitely helped in terms of confidence – I still get nervous before talks and gigs but I am much more comfortable in front of an audience than I used to be. It’s also helped me in terms of feeling comfortable using humour more generally in talks (where appropriate!). As a scientist, getting involved in comedy has also given me a whole new perspective on how laughter works in audiences, which has been very interesting.
