Babies go through stages of learning how to speak. They start listening and learning about language even while still in the womb. After birth, first they coo and “babble” and make speech sounds in isolation. They then go on to combine those sounds through repetition and experimentation. As babies grow so does their vocal tract so they have to constantly readjust how they’re making sounds to account for this, mostly by listening to themselves and comparing it to the language they hear around them.
