Facebook seems to be taking this very seriously! https://techcrunch.com/2017/08/18/facebook-after-death/

Facebook has a system for memorializing such pages – they stay up but there’s some indication that the owner is dead. In your personal settings there’s an option to designate someone who will be in charge of your page if you die or become incapacitated. Google has a similar arrangement for accounts.

It becomes ‘memorialised’. It will say at the top ‘Remembering *personMATOMO_URL
We hope that people who love *person* will find comfort in visiting their profile to remember and celebrate their life.’ And there is a little blue forget-me-not next to the message. On their cover photo, above their name it says ‘remembering’. People can no longer post on their wall, or tag them, but they can still be sent messages.

I think the person’s family has to flag their facebook profile to the people at facebook first, who will then verify that it is indeed true (to prevent people being horrible).
