Nice question. My answer would be – sort of. My interest in sport made me want to work in sport in some capacity – I was never going to be a professional in any sport I played! So I studied sport science with the aim of being a sports scientist either working on the physical, training and testing, side of things or being a sports psychologist.
Since making the move to neuroscience, studying how the brain controls movement, I’ve ended up working at the UCL Institute of Neurology in Queen Square. Recently my mum became a patient here because of a neurological disorder. Though I’m not able to help her directly, since I’m not a medical doctor, some of my recent research has leant towards potential treatments for people with similar conditions. My research probably won’t directly benefit my mum, but maybe one day it will have contributed to helping other people like her.
