Birds do sing, but most of the time they are not ‘talking’ in the way that we talk – about things and events. Birdsong is often linked to mate attraction, so male birds will produce a song in order to attract a mate.
So, even though birds don’t communicate in the same way as we do through their singing, they might be able to get some of the same information from singing as we get from hearing speech–just like we can tell whether someone is from the same area as us or not by hearing their accent, birds might be able to tell that a bird from the same species as them is not from the same area as them.
